I have long been an admirer of Donnelly and have never understood why it took so long for him to break in to the All Blacks. Perhaps some readers here could enlighten me as to what his shortcomings are. I just saw a man who was strong in the lineout, powerful at the breakdown and in the loose, and who got around the park well.
On another matter, I think it a bit glib of Planet Rugby to describe the Highlanders as the perennial underachievers of New Zealand rugby. Sure, they haven't had the success of the Crusaders or, in recent years, the Hurricanes, but they are the least-resourced of the five Super Rugby franchises and, given that, have performed better than anyone. Surely the perennial underachievers of NZ rugby have been the Blues. I see the Auckland media are beating up their chances again this year.
